Manuscript copy of letters and documents exchanged between James Stuart, "the Old Pretender," and Henry St. John, Viscount Bolingbroke, in the aftermath of the unsuccessful Jacobite rebellion in 1715. The letters by James contain his explanation for the failure of the rising, including denunciations of Bolingbroke's supposed failure to send supplies and reinforcements and his apparent lack of loyalty to the Jacobite cause; Bolingbroke attempts to refute these charges in his own statements.

James Stuart, also known as "The Old Pretender," was the son and heir of King James II of England (James VII of Scotland), who was deposed in 1688. Raised in exile in France, Stuart never gave up his claim to both crowns, and after Jacobites in Scotland rose in rebellion against the new Hanoverian king in 1715, James landed in Scotland in hopes of seizing power. Henry St. John Bolingbroke was born in Battersea in 1678. He was educated at Eton and Oxford. He married the daughter of Sir Henry Winchcomb.
